    All the small things

    By Konrad | March 17, 2008

So after I took a short break I am reporting back. As a matter of fact, there are very little things which upset me, atleast I am very convinced of this. However, it is naturally that I am not in the mood for anything, when my computer is out of order. It figures! A half year before buying a complete new system, my 6 year old computer gives up the ghost.

Computer crashes had happened regulary before with an awesome sound in the headphones where you get the wish to smash them down on the ground. One ignores such things until the hardware is totally damaged. Anyway, I brought the computer away for repair. I was hoping it would be the power pack, but unfortunately the mainboard’s capacitors were defect which are puffed out then. So now go and try to get a 478 socket Mainboard with AGP Slot. There are 1 or 2 end-of-range models with PCIe slot and 2 DDR slots, though I needed one with 4. So I had the opportunities to buy a complete new system or upgrade partially. Since I wanted to buy a compelte new system together with my move out I tried Ebay. In fact, the ASUS P4P800 mainboard had a large number of productions back then, so Ebay was full of my mainboard and I could choose one, located in Berlin.

To save money and time, I have driven past and picked it up. I was a little bit confused, when I saw the chipset cooler. It should actually look like this (upper), however it looked like this (lower). The seller performed handicraft on it because his graphic card did not fit. I am afraid I cannot handle such situations well, so I just bought it and went home.

However, luckily everything worked probably. In retrospect it was the cheapest variant, also it would have made more sense to buy a new system. But when moving out of the house of your parents it is like a fresh start, new furtinutre, new decoration etc. and I would dislike the idea to bring my new old computer.

Of course, I was really upset how much I depend on such a small thing, but this is part of life. One aquires certain things in life and expects them to be ready for usage when one needs them. I have devoted myself to the computer and when it is not there it destroys my daily routine. However, in fact everything is on balance again, in this sense: back on track.
